Unfortunately, the U.S. system of govt doesn’t deal well with ideological purity. Parliamentary systems work better. @benthompson

And this purity is a natural state. The days of having conservatives & liberals in both parties were a holdover from Jim Crow. @benthompson

I agree, but another factor (discussed by @mattyglesias) is that today’s U.S. political parties are more ideologically pure. @benthompson
